Sporting Event | Barmouth

The Three Peaks Yacht Race is an iconic and thrilling multi-sport endurance race that has been running since 1977. Teams of four or five per yacht sail from Barmouth, a mid-Wales coastal resort, to Fort William, up the west coast of the UK.

The race attracts competitors from a wide range of sporting backgrounds and sailing experience, from off-shore cruising to round-the-world racing. It is open to both multihulls and monohulls, and there is a non-competitive Challenge class available. The race is run under handicap, and all teams compete on equal terms.

The land stages to the three peaks involve running 54.8 miles, cycling 40 miles, and climbing 16,500 feet in three or four action-packed days. The sailing is approximately 389 sea miles. To participate, team members must be over 18 years old (those over 16 will be considered with parental and Skipper's consent).

A unique feature of the race is that rowing is allowed, although the use of engines is not permitted, except for safety reasons in specific areas in ports. The Tilman Cup is awarded to the team with the best all-round performance. To win this, four team members must reach a summit.

Support crews are restricted in what support they can give but can meet the teams on land. Many teams participate without any form of back up at all. From 2018, the non-competitive Challenge Class allows teams to use engines if necessary and is not restricted to five. From 2019, multi-hulls were once again allowed to enter, and the main race categories are decided under. The next race will take place on June 10th 2023.

Before the start of the race, there is a procession of the yachts from Barmouth Harbour to the start line, which is accompanied by numerous events, stalls, and music.
